چکیده

This paper presents an efficient 88 line MATLAB code for topology optimization. It has been developed using the 99 line code presented by Sigmund (2001) as a starting point. The original code has been extended by a density filter, and a considerable improvement in efficiency has been achieved, mainly by preallocating arrays and vectorizing loops. A speed improvement with a factor of 100 is achieved for a benchmark example with 7500 elements. Moreover, the length of the code has been reduced to a mere 88 lines. These improvements have been accomplished without sacrificing the readability of the code. The 88 line code can therefore be considered as a valuable successor to the 99 line code, providing a practical instrument that may help to ease the learning curve for those entering the field of topology optimization. The complete 88 line code is included as an appendix and can be downloaded from the web site www.topopt.dtu.dk. This is uncorrected version of the paper: Efficient topology optimization in MATLAB using 88 lines of code, E. Andreassen, A. Clausen, M. Schevenels, B. S. Lazarov and O. Sigmund, Struct Multidisc Optim, 43, pp 1-16, 2011

3D BENCHMARK RESULTS FOR ROBUST STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION UNDER UNCERTAINTY IN LOADING DIRECTIONS

This study has been inspired by the paper "An efficient 3D topology optimization code written in MATLAB” written by Liu and Tovar (2014) demonstrating that SIMP-based three-dimensional (3D) topology optimization of continuum structures can be implemented in 169 lines of MATLAB code. Based on the above paper, we show here that, by simple and easy-to-understand modificati...

EFFICIENT SIMULATION FOR OPTIMIZATION OF TOPOLOGY, SHAPE AND SIZE OF MODULAR TRUSS STRUCTURES

The prevalent strategy in the topology optimization phase is to select a subset of members existing in an excessively connected truss, called Ground Structure, such that the overall weight or cost is minimized. Although finding a good topology significantly reduces the overall cost, excessive growth of the size of topology space combined with existence of varied types of design variables challe...

ISOGEOMETRIC TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION OF STRUCTURES USING LEVEL SET METHOD INCORPORATING SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS

This study focuses on the topology optimization of structures using a hybrid of level set method (LSM) incorporating sensitivity analysis and isogeometric analysis (IGA). First, the topology optimization problem is formulated using the LSM based on the shape gradient. The shape gradient easily handles boundary propagation with topological changes. In the LSM, the topological gradient method as ...

Topology optimization using an adaptive genetic algorithm and a new geometric representation

A new method for structural topology optimization using a genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper. This method uses a topology representation by Bézier curves with varying thickness material distribution in a finite element model. Two groups of variables are considered: control points of Bézier curves and thickness values for each curve. This new technique avoids the formation of disconnect...
